Spring Training & Avoiding Muscle Injury

bike-race1There is something about flowers blooming, trees leafing out, and mild weather, that awakens our sense and incites us to shake off the winter inertia.  Doing so, we end our spring exuberance by getting injured.

I remember my wake-up call.  I was a 25 year old professional, working in New York City, and suddenly, Spring Fever hit my brain.  During high school I was a little ballerina, so I thought, “Hey, no brainer.  I’ll take some ballet lessons in the city and get into shape”. So I marched up to Carnegie Hall, took a lesson, overdid myself, and ripped a muscle in my groin.  Sporting a groin rip is something you don’t want to talk about around the water cooler. Wish I had Elixer Arnica Sports Rub TM in those days.

Now being a parent, I’m noticing that kids are becoming more and more injured due to sports which have demanding work-out schedules.  Although the sports teams try to warm up the kids, children always feel that they are immortal until the first serious muscle injury. My eldest daughter, a competitive swimmer, has a shoulder condition, and must work out with a series of exercises designed to strengthen her lower back muscles.

We are all vulnerable to muscle injury, but they are mostly avoidable.  Just remember to eat right, get enough sleep and before any exercise, and warm up slowly using the gentle techniques of Yoga.  Also don’t outdo yourself, you have to be able to walk into the office by Monday.  And slap on some Elixer on those muscle that you know are problematic.  It will help keep your inflammation down, and soothe those muscles.

Have a wonderful workout and stay healthy………Nadine

Muscle Pain Treatment for Springtime Gardening

hand-shovel1Imagine this year after garden clean-up, being free from muscle pain.

It’s that time of year, where we are all getting out the heavy gardening equipment and heading to those untended patches where we will dig, clean and plant.  Unfortunately, this event leads to inevitable muscle pulls and pains  that last for at least a week. I am as much a sucker as the next person for digging up garden beds, and have always paid a severe price.

After three days of rain and drizzle, the garden ground on my property was soft enough to dig up.  Weeds were hip high and all sort of nasty things were setting long roots into the earth.  So, as the Garden Avenger, I went out and started digging and pulling out all those freeloaders.  After three hours into the job, pulling up some grasses, I felt it.  It was a big nasty rip, accompanied by a sharp and intense pain of right shoulder pain.  Thanks heavens the kids weren’t around, since my language was rather colorful.  However, I still had to finish weeding that area, and continued in spite of the pain.

Later that day, the pain was relentless.  Finally I broke down and asked my husband to rub some Elixer Arnica Sports RubTM.  You would think that I’d be smart enough to take my own medicine, but no, I really had to make sure that I did truly injure my right shoulder.  Well, Warren massaged the cream into my right shoulder and slowly the pain started subsiding.  By dinner time, I forgot about my garden injury.  In fact I forgot to have Warren rub some more before I went to bed.

The next morning I got up and no right shoulder pain.  But I’ve got little aches everywhere else from yesterday’s digging.  So a few more rubs of Elixer and I’m good to get back in the garden and finish yesterday’s job.

And how are your gardens doing?  Your thoughts appreciated…..Nadine

Relieving Pre-Operation Pain Helps Reduce Post-Operation Pain

afro-amer-seniors-on-bikes1Preparing yourself or a loved one for surgery is always a stressful time.  There is always the apprehension about the surgery and the whether or not the expected results will occur.  ”Will I be better off, having done the surgery”, is a question we all ask ourselves.  However with a little preparation, you can ease the anxiety and improve the results.

After two surgeries on his broken heel, Calvin Palmer was wondering whether he was better off without the second surgery.  He couldn’t walk without crutches and was reduce to wearing backless slippers to go to work.  He had little or no feeling in his toes, and was wondering if he would ever recuperate and go back to leading a normal life.

In the case of orthopedic or plastic surgery, getting rid of inflammation before the operation is greatly beneficial.  Since arnica montana is a natural non-steriod, anti-inflammatory botanicals, it will reduce swelling in the areas where cream is applied.  It will not affect the rest of your body like ibuprophen.  Elixer Arnica Sports Rub has proven itself to be wonderful in preparing for plastic surgery, since it will reduce liquid retention in the face, thus allowing better cosmetic results.

For post-operative surgery, arnica helps minimize post-operative swelling and bruising, thus improving wound healing, limiting scar appearance, reduce chance for infection, and reducing the pain and discomfort.  Arnica should be put around a wound, but not directly on it since it could irritate the incision.

Luckily for Calvin, help was on the way.  His sister heard about Elixer Arnica Sports Rub TM and brought him a jar.  Within minutes he was able to feel a bit of his toes, and was able to put on shoes.  The pain was gone.  And in a week, so were the crutches.  Now Calvin can get back to normal and live his life!

Aromatherapy Uses and Essential Oils

frapiani-flowersBulgarian rose, French lavender, tea tree, tangerine, lemongrass, Egyptian geranium and peppermint essentials oils.  All of these wonderful oils evoking our childhood memories of gardens, kitchens and exotic places.  They are volatile or ethereal oils, consisting of a concentrated liquid.  This liquid contains aroma compounds from a plant, such as oil of Bulgarian Rose.

Essential oils have curative effects. They were used in ancient times, and are now gaining popularity today.  Due to the numerous health benefits of essential oils, they are being explored by the scientific community for treating a variety of diseases including cancer, HIV, asthma, bronchitis, heart strokes, etc.  When volatilized or diluted in carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil, these oils can be used in massage therapy.  The oils can be diffused in the air or heated using a candle or heater.

Scents are very powerful in our lives, from warning us that something disagreeable is around the corner, helping us to fall in love, to making us change our minds.  Houses sell if they smell fresh and clean, sleep comes easy if calming oil is sprayed on our pillows, and a drop of cinnamon in the kitchen brings smiles to our faces.  I, an east coast girl, vividly remember playing tennis out in California and smelling wild fennel in the breeze.  In fact that helped me decided to move out to the West Coast.

Essential oils when in contact with our skin, have wonderful healing effects, from slowing down our skin’s aging process, calming nerves, energizing us, and assisting our to renew itself and regenerate.  Here at Frush Botanicals, we carefully use the power of aromatherapy and essentials in creams, along with their healing effects.  We want you not only to feel good, but to smell good.

Your thoughts always appreciated……………Nadine

Acute Pain Management: Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

mature-autumn-walker-smallSevere back pain, PercocetTM (Percoset), OxyContin TM (Oxycodone), severe constipation are all words describing a non-hodgkins lymphoma patient of  Teresa Crouch, a home health professional from the San Francisco Bay area. Teresa  agreed to be interview about her client’s illness and pain management.

“When I first started with this wonderful woman, not only was she in terrible back pain but the pain was compounded due to the side effects of her pain medications, Percocet and Oxycontin.  Those two medications caused severe constipation, thus putting pressure on her lower back.  My patient’s non-hodgkins lymphoma was initially found on her spine and that area gives her the most pain.  The pain meds which are a serious part of her regimen were causing the constipation along with lack of clarity. She was taking two pills every four hours”

Percocet is a narcotic analgesic and is used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. It contains a combination of two medicines - acetaminophen and oxycodone. Acetaminophen is used to reduce both pain and fever.  OxyContin is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers. It is similar to morphine and is used to treat moderate to severe pain.   It is habit-forming along with Percoset.

“For the past three months I have been using Elixer Arnica Sports RubTM twice a day, on my patient’s back with a warm compress,” continued Theresa.  ”The product gives my patient immediate relief and no longer does she need to depend on the Percocet or the Oxycontin. We are completely off from using them, now we are down to one other pain medication three times a day.  And her bowel movements are regular - no more constipation.  She can enjoy her life and stay clear-headed. Now she can rest and sleep without pain or discomfort”

Not only is Theresa thrilled with Elixer for her clients, she now uses it daily on herself for her bad back.  Having worked in assisted living and nursing homes for the past forty years and constantly transferring (lifting) patients, she uses Elixer along with a warm rice pack.  ”This rub has been the quickest acting product I’ve ever used.  There is no burning or icy sensation, it smells good and feels good.  Elixer is a great value, since it is fast-acting and so safe compare to the pain meds we were using. I’m spreading the word to patients, friends and family,” concluded Theresa.

Thank you Theresa, for your wonderful endorsement of Elixer Arnica Sports Rub.

About Shingles - Finding Some Relief!

daisy_16177507Varicella Zoster (VZV), a virus known for chicken pox, remains dormant in our systems for years.  It attaches itself to a ganglia, which are the spinal nerves.  Later in our lives, it reactivates and travels down the sensory nerve to the skin, causing a painful skin rash called shingles.  The virus can produce sensory loss, pain, and other neurological complications. If motor nerve roots are also involved, weakness can develop in addition to sensory changes.

Your odds are 5 to 1000 of getting shingles, and immune-compromise, poor nutrition, and aging seriously increases your odds.  There are a few remedies to treat shingles but there is no cure, since shingles is a herpes form of virus.  As I paraphrase an old tasteless joke, “Shingles, the gift that keeps on giving”.

I remember years ago getting chicken pox, and having my mother hovering over me for days making sure that I didn’t scratch the itchy spots.  At one point she put gloves on my hands to be certain that I wouldn’t have any facial reminders of the pox. And having to deal with mess of dripping calamine lotion all over my face and body was not fun for either one of us.  But we never realized that by protecting your child’s immunity by having chicken pox, you could make them vulnerable to a host of diseases in the future such as shingles.

Treatment for shingles can be toxic by using over-the-counter medications such as ibuprophen or aspirin, and corticosteriods such as prednisone, whose side effect increase the chances for the spreading of shingles, and meningitis.  Not a rosy picture.

Currently we have several clients using Elixer Arnica Sports Rub TM to manage their shingles outburst.  Since the product was never designed to address shingles victims, I was greatly surprised to hear how well it did in pain management.  An herbalist told me that since Arnica is an anti-inflammatory, and has anti-viral properties, it should be considered as a powerful weapon against shingles.

Since we have little documentation on shingles, we invite you to test try our product in the treatment of shingles.

If Your Husband is a Week-end Warrior, then Stock up with Arnica Rub!

man-on-crutches-crop3My 6′5″ tall husband, Warren, injured himself playing basketball by pulling a calf muscle, and like the true weekend warrior, came home to his ministering angel to repair his wounds. He burst through the door limping, barely able to walk, screaming for me to get the crutches and the arnica rub.

When an event like this happens to a friend or family member, you reach into your bag of tricks and pull out everything from ice packs, Epsom salts, ibuprofen, hot tubs to various botanical products, including a super arsenal of arnica pills or arnica tablets and an arnica rub.

Warren knew from past experience that adding arnica pills to a regiment of Epson Salts soaks and deep muscle massage with arnica cream, would greatly improved the speed of his recovery. In the past, Warren didn’t want to use the arnica tablets, arnica rub or ibuprofen pills since he wanted to be tough, but after a week’s worth of suffering from his previous injuries and several months of recovery, he had learned his lesson. Now, he knows better and listens to me right from the beginning.

After the first Epsom Salt soak and deep massage with Elixer Arnica Sports RubTM, he abandoned the crutches since the pain was manageable.  Twenty-four (24) hours later, the pain was gone, and no more massages. One week later, in which he used Elixer morning and night, he was back on the court playing carefully (not wanting to re-injure himself) a game of basketball.

And I got a dozen long-stem roses.

Combatting Rheumatoid Arthritis & Osteoarthritis

Like most 50 somethings, my mornings start with a physical inventory of what works and what does NOT work.  Which joints are acting up and showing those ever popular arthritis symptoms, and which are just sore muscles from last evenings activities.

I love digging in the garden, whisking eggs for my childrens’ omelets and keeping my independence opening jars without calling for the aid of my husband, but rheumatoid arthritis use to keep me from these activities. It took me several years to admit my condition was caused by arthritis and not eating carbs or repetitive stress syndrome. When I did finally come around to accept my condition I was faced with a medical system that preferred turning to toxic pharmaceutical remedies.

I can handle the thought of osteoarthritis in my knees and feet, after all, I did bang them around a lot when I was mommy’s little ballerina wearing toe shoes, and once did a real number to my knee when we went skiing thirteen years ago, but “old lady” arthritis to my hands isn’t fair.  And the thought of reddened, inflamed joints with useless fingers that are in pain is a scary vision on my aging path.

When I first started working with Arnica Montana, due to my daughter’s shoulder injury from competitive swimming, I had no idea how powerful the botanical would be in the fight against arthritic pain. The arnica rub was developed for muscle pain and I never thought that it would be an effective pain treatment for other ailments.  But users are now telling me their stories - their ailments, the failed or damaging treatments, and their successes.  And the stories are amazing, especially from sufferers of arthritis.  Recently a friend of mine came up to me telling me that our arnica cream is the only thing helping her crippled arthritic fingers.  She said that taking the prescribed daily high doses of aspirin or ibuprofen, has too many risks, and that the usage of CELEBREX® (celecoxib) Capsules creeped her out with its side effects of strokes and serious gastrointestinal adverse events (see http://www.rxlist.com/celebrex-drug.htm).  Another client buys our cream for her sister-in-law, who for the first time in three years, can move her thumb.  I’ve got farmers that work in the fields, sometimes hand-harvesting or weeding, who have told me that by using Elixer, they’ve had the first good night sleep in years.

So whether you have a muscle injury, or an autoimmune disease, such as arthritis and shingles, Elixer Arnica Sports Rub may be your answer to control the pain from inflammation.

A penny for your thoughts…….Nadine

New Year 2009

2008 was wonderful to Frush Botanicals - website is up, on-line store works and  our product is selling brilliantly with our retail clients.  2009 is going to be the year that our on-line marketing takes off, and we start getting into the pro-sports venue.  Currently, many pro teams are testing the product.

Since this is the age of “can do” and “Change can happen”, we will be staying in line with this message.  It is not just about cream, but doing better for the world.  Not just about having healthier alternatives to medical solutions, but having alternatives for our community, employees.  I’ve got a couple micro charities in Africa and India (an orphanage in India, and a girl’s education program in Africa) that we can hopefully commit to, as long as there are growing sales.  This will be a challenging economic period for us, but I know that we can progress during these times.

Best Wishes for the New Year………….Nadine

Another Great Week!

Finally, after much hesitation, I got on the phone and started calling.  With the current economic news, and resorts tightening their belt, I have been a frozen popsicle at my desk, waiting for the great deep thaw that will happen in about 2.5 years.  And that’s being optimistic.

However I started researching NBA teams to find addresses, phone numbers and the names.  Then it took me 2 days to get the moxie up and CALL THEM.  Result for the first 15 dials:  3 teams said that they would try the product - the Washington Wizards, the Miami Heat and the Milwaukee Bucks.  So this weekend, out goes the sample packs.  And next week I will finish the list and start working on Soccer and Hockey.

I called up one of my favorite Strength and Conditioning Performance Coaches, Greg Marshall of Marshall Sports Performance, who is using Elixer Arnica Sports Rub on many of this clients.  Seems that my idea of applying heat to the injured area after rubbing on the cream, is paying off.  Not only that, but also he uses the cream on his clients before they begin the warm-up, as to avoid inflammation from the workout.  So hearing this great news and with the hope that major players will start using Elixer, makes me a happy woman.

In Other Words, despite my dislike to cold call, it has been a great week.  Hope your week went well too and that you are looking forward to the holidays……………….Nadine
